Strong demand for internal auditors from the financial sector
During the first months of 2010 the demand for internal auditors increased. This was a continuation of the trend established in the second half of 2009 and is set against what had been the most significant fall in demand for internal auditors during the last 20 years. The recovery is not universal and is being driven by the financial sector where demand has spread from the banks to include the entire sector.
The public sector has entered an extended period where recruitment will remain subdued. Within commerce a modest recovery is underway but it is focused on UK centric commercial groups rather than the multinationals who base their internal audit departments in the UK. Amongst the consultancies, the Big 4 have not undertaken any significant external recruitment for two years. They are likely to return to the recruitment market in the second half of 2010.
Whilst the economic recovery remains fragile and in some respects the risks to future growth appear greater than six months ago, we expect demand for internal and IT auditors to expand as 2010 progresses. The chronic shortage of internal auditors that has historically been a feature of the recruitment market is already once again evident.
